Four games into the 2009 season the Raiders now stand at 0-4 on the year losing what could've been the best game they've played all season again the Lake Norman Wildcats 21-6 this past Friday in Olin. The Raiders put the first points on the board after stopping Lake Norman on at least 3 consecutive drives during the first quarter. By halftime it was a tied ball game 6-6 and as the teams sat around the locker rooms the coaches were getting ready for a potential all-out slugfest as tempers were getting rather enraged due to enormous Lake Norman penalties.

The second half kicked off as North would take possession and that's where everything came to a screeching halt, North Iredell lost 4 consecutive drives and was forced to either attempt a field goal or to punt it away. North Iredell succumbed to a 15-point runaway by Lake Norman off those 4 lost drives.

By the time the 4th quarter arrived Lake Norman was already up 21-6, and the fog down on the field had everything so blanketed we were required to hit the sidelines to call the rest of the game. But that score would remain exactly the same throughout the final quarter of play. The game was halted for almost an hour due to an injured Raider being carried away in an ambulance due to an allergic reaction to which we still do not know the cause but while waiting for the EMT's to arrive, North Iredell had an excellent chance to rest up as it appeared they were getting tired, due to many of the players working double duty on both offense and defense.

The ambulance soon arrived, and the game was back underway. Again we're down on the sidelines where most broadcast crews do not even dare go for the simple fact, you never know when a pass may come your way or if a defender may run into you, no matter where you are positioned. Nonetheless, we all got to see up close what North's new offensive regime was like. It was a "Shotgun-I" formation with the option for a triple option and double option which was very effective for North, They gained quite a few yards and lost a few as well. But still at the end of the night, North just couldn't hang on and regain any points on the board. The loss is a heartbreaker to North as they are now 0-4 on the season and Lake Norman went to 5-0 on the season. Post game wasn't too much better as granted the two schools really don't want their players near each other in just a "friendly" setting due to the all-out brawl in 2004 when the Raiders were on their way to claiming victory, and soon after they were on their way to a horrible playoff berth.

But Coach Steve Sherrill pulled his players away immediately after the buzzer and took the handshake line himself. Some like this journalist find that very distasteful, yet some find it appropriate due to the fact there could've have been another fight due to all the penalties Lake Norman was assessed.

North Iredell heads to West Lincoln this weekend for another NPC 3-A Conference duel. Will the Raiders get that much needed victory or will something go wrong and hurt our beloved Raiders once again. Find out next week as Highway 40 Country will not be able to attend this game.
